Philip Lynott

So I'll go, and hope and know

That my time is near

Laughing through the years

Having only fears

Of aging...

(From The Saga Of The Ageing Orphan, 1971)

A

s leader of the hugely influential band Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott was the man who brought Irish rock music to a worldwide audience. Apart from the madness which was Thin Lizzy however he also made two solo albums, collaborated on numerous other musical projects and published two books of lyrics and poetry. Phil often called himself "Phil Why-Not", in reference to his "try anything" lifestyle; his stamina was legendary, but he made one major mistake - heroin. Years of abuse wore his body out long before his time, and he died on January 4th 1986, at the age of 36.
A picture of his grave, which is a point of pilgrimage for fans from all over the world, can be seen by clicking here. His career has been well-documented, the two links below being good places to start.
