Midnight Choir

Been getting tired of faking it

Why don't you go fuck someone else?

Been getting tired of losing it

Don't ask me to come and help

(From Jeff Bridges, 1996)

M

idnight Choir, a bunch of Norwegians personally recommended by Chris Eckman of the Walkabouts, are NOT depressing - they've gone so far beyond depressing they've already come out the other side and are positively uplifting in their gloom...

The Church's very own Brother Erlend runs a Midnight Choir website from his hideaway in Norway, and is the leading authority on the band, seemingly knowing more about them than the band members themselves - although, when you see the state Paul, Atle & Co. drink themselves into, that's probably not too difficult...

The first two albums are hard to find outside of Scandinavia, but Brother Erlend has been working on the problem, so they are likely to appear in mainland Europe before long - in the meantime, pick up Amsterdam Stranded or Unsung Heroine, which are much more widely available, and hear for yourself a superb band which fits into none of the yet-designated categories - one of the few groups around which can turn depression into a positive characteristic!
Cardinals Hank & Casey, in the company of Highpriestess Harmony and Mother Theresa had the pleasure of checking them out live in Munich on 07.12.00 - drunken grins and thumbs-up from all concerned!
